South Sudan Announces Final Olympic Basketball Roster
Team Includes Two NBA Players
Carlik Jones and Wenyen Gabriel To Represent South Sudan
Days before the start of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, the South Sudan men's basketball team has announced its final roster for the tournament. The team will feature two players with NBA experience in Carlik Jones and Wenyen Gabriel. Jones, a point guard, currently plays for the Indiana Pacers, while Gabriel, a center, plays for the Toronto Raptors.
South Sudan is making its Olympic debut in basketball at the 2024 Games. The team qualified for the Olympics by winning the 2023 FIBA AfroBasket tournament in Rwanda. South Sudan is the first African nation to qualify for the Olympics in basketball since Nigeria in 2012.
The South Sudan team is coached by former NBA player Luol Deng. Deng is a two-time NBA All-Star and was a key member of the Chicago Bulls team that won the 2011 NBA championship.
South Sudan is expected to be a competitive team at the Olympics. The team has a good mix of young and experienced players, and Jones and Gabriel are two of the best players in Africa. South Sudan is hoping to make a deep run into the tournament and possibly medal.
